Social Media Workshop!

This past week, PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) at Ohio Northern University hosted an all-day workshop on social media. This not only got me out of some of my less exciting classes, but it also proved really beneficial. The workshop covered a broad range of topics under the social media marketing umbrella. The speaker who most resonated with me was Dyaton Barnett. He was extremely lively and personable, and the social media accounts he manages target 18- to 24-year-olds effectively. His passion for his career was evident in his presentation. He manages social media accounts for the Lake Erie area. Being from Toledo, I have visited Put-In-Bay and many of the locations he mentioned. Knowing the places he creates content for made his presentation particularly interesting because I understand the feeling and vibe of those places, and I believe his content accurately represents them. I found it interesting how he mentioned needing to adjust some of the messaging he initially posted because homeowners felt it focused too much on tourism rather than providing a full view of the area.

Another speaker who stood out was Mallory Grayson. She discussed influencer marketing for her ISAW campaign, aimed at raising awareness and funds for children experiencing infantile spasms. The campaign had a budget of $1,000, divided between two paid influencers, but it also brought in 18 unpaid influencers. In total, the campaign raised over $90,000, a sum that astonished me given the modest investment. The campaign utilized various types of media, including infographics, images, and videos, to depict what the spasms look like. Overall, it was sharply focused on increasing awareness about infantile spasms, a goal I believe it achieved successfully. Moreover, many people, myself included, might not have been aware of infantile spasms before this campaign.

Overall, the social media workshop was a fun and informative day. With speakers covering a wide variety of topics and sharing a range of experiences, it was a day well spent learning more about social media marketing.
